Creation-time Creativity: Bug Hotels
What a great day we had in Bwlch Village Hall making 5 star bug hotels.
Steve and Ivan from Llangynidr had prepared the outer frame for us and helped us to create the inner divisions. Those of us not so smart at DIY were glad of help from them and David with power drills and screwdrivers. Then came the filling with cones, sticks, slate, bamboo, etc.
We stopped for a bring and share lunch and then got back to work. It takes a lot of bits and pieces to fill a large bug house, but everyone had brought things to share. With wire netting to hold in small items and waterproof roofing fitted, the bug hotels were ready for display.
Thanks to Margery and Jill for organising the refreshments and to everyone for the lovely food, and most of all to Ivan and Steve for their hard work and expertise and David and Bryn for extra help. I am sure the bugs around our pastorate will be happy to populate the hotels over the winter. And it will help us on our eco-award journeys.
Brecon Beacons Pastorate bug hotel day
Meeting, greeting, drinking, eating,
What a lovely atmosphere.
Such a lot of preparation,
Tools and timber everywhere.
Drills are ready, keep them steady,
Teams are forming, let’s begin,
Such an air of concentration.
What a lovely place we’re in.
Now the noise of sawing, drilling,
People sharing their ideas,
Soon the bug hotels are filling,
So well-built they’ll last for years.
Will we ever get them finished?
Never fear, we’re on our way.
Our eagerness is not diminished,
When they’re done we’ll shout ‘Hooray!’

Food Fest 2025
The chapel and garden (pick your own apple) were open for the Abergavenny Food festival weekend with Open Doors, Chapel history, Fair Trade & WI displays, a colourful Health Help International craft stall (with a children’s game too) and a wonderful knitted display celebrating 150 years of the Salvation Army in Wales.
This took up the whole front of the chapel, with The Garden of Eden, Noah’s Ark, Jesus’ birth, crucifixion and resurrection, scenes of Salvation Army activities including a band and the Salvation Navy ship. The display created a lot of interest among visitors to the Food Festival and members of other local churches.
The Salvation Army officers present explained about the display and their work. We also had a prayer corner with activities for young visitors. Saturday saw an organ recital by Oliver Barton and impromptu sessions by 3 visiting organists. The Sunday afternoon highlight was the Salvation Army band playing outside chapel.
This was a real ecumenical event as the display was seen at the Eisteddfod by a Methodist friend whose church was not suitable for the large display and we all worked together to prepare for it.
