Walking for Dementia

Barbara Whitticase, a member at Tabernacle URC Pennorth, is taking on a sponsored walk on Saturday 2 July. It will be a trek of 13 miles in the Brecon Beacons and all funds raised are for the Alzheimer’s Society.

When Sue Cole asked what had inspired her to sign up for this challenge, Barbara explained, “There seems to be an increasing number of people in our local community who have been diagnosed with dementia, including some of my close friends and relatives. I am celebrating a big birthday in June and have been in the habit of taking on a new challenge to mark these life events. When a card was delivered in the post advertising the sponsored trek it felt as though someone was suggesting it for my next challenge. So I decided to sign up.”

Sue was cheeky enough to ask Barbara which particular life event will she be celebrating this year?

Barbara replied, “80. Thirteen miles is a big challenge but I have been a member of a walking group for many years. One of the other members of the group is joining me. We are known as the Dynamic Duo and have been doing some training together to ensure we are ready for whatever route is decided.”

Don’t we all hope to be fit enough to take on challenges like this when we reach such milestones?
