Divesting from fossil fuels

The United Reformed Church’s National Synod of Wales is the first church body in Wales to end investments in fossil fuel companies.

The resolution was passed at the Synod meeting in October 2019. It was proposed by members of Beulah URC in Cardiff, a congregation that decided to divest from fossil fuels in June.

“This is part of the church’s desire to respond to the climate emergency and act for the future of our children and grandchildren, as well as the many people around the world who are already experiencing the devastating impacts of climate change,” said the Revd Simon Walkling, Moderator of the National Synod of Wales.

Wales joins four other synods that have made commitments to divest from fossil fuels – Scotland, Yorkshire, Wessex and South Western – and complements the URC’s national decision in May 2019.
